Does your child know how to add and subtract, but still guess when a math problem is written as a story?
Some Grade 2 children can calculate correctly on a worksheet, but slow down when they have to decide whether a word problem is asking them to add, subtract, find a missing part, or follow two actions in order.
They may grab the numbers too quickly, use every number in the problem, rely on clue words, or write an equation that does not match the story.
Why common advice does not always help
When used alone, “look for the key word” advice can lead to guessing. A word like “more” does not always mean the same action in every problem. A child may also subtract just because a problem says “left,” or add a total and one part when the question is really asking for the missing part.
This workbook does not ask children to choose plus or minus first.
It teaches them to build the model first.
What this workbook does differently
Grade 2 Word Problem Rescue: Build the Model First uses a clear model-first routine:
- Read the question.
- Label the useful numbers.
- Build a simple model or bar model.
- Use the model to decide the equation.
- Solve and check the answer in words.
Inside, children work through 45 guided model-first addition and subtraction word problems. The practice includes missing numbers, two-step stories, extra information, and fix-the-mistake practice.
The pages are intentionally simple. The goal is not to make the child rush through more problems. The goal is to help the child slow down, understand what the story is asking, and connect the equation to the model.
What is included
- 45 guided Grade 2 addition and subtraction word problems
- Model-first practice with Grade 2 numbers
- Missing-number problems
- Two-step story problems
- Extra-information problems
- Fix-the-mistake reasoning practice
- Mini-assessment before Unit 1
- Practice tracker
- Parent Visual Answer Key with blue-ink completed sample pages
This book is for:
- Grade 2 children who can often add and subtract but still struggle with word problems
- Parents who want a calm, step-by-step way to guide math practice at home
- Homeschool families, tutors, and classroom support practice
- Children who need help understanding what the numbers mean before choosing an operation
This book is not for:
- Children who need beginning instruction in basic addition and subtraction facts
- Families looking for advanced word problems beyond Grade 2 addition and subtraction
- Students who only need speed drills or computation-only practice
If your child keeps asking, “Do I add or subtract?” this workbook gives them a steadier first question:
What does the story show?
Use one problem page at a time. Build the model first. Then solve.
